U.S. National Commission on Mathematics Instruction (USNC/MI)

The National Academy of Sciences withdrew as the U.S. adhering member of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI), effective February 18, 2026, and no longer serves as the U.S. adhering body to the commission. As a result, the U.S. National Commission on Mathematics Instruction (USNC/MI) has been dissolved. This page is retained for historical purposes and reflects the National Academy of Sciences’ former relationship with the commission.

Statement of Task

The National Academy of Sciences is the U.S. adhering body of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) and it maintains its relationship with the commission through the U.S. National Commission on Mathematics Instruction (USNC/MI). ICMI is a commission of the International Mathematical Union (IMU), which fosters efforts to improve the quality of mathematics teaching and learning worldwide.
